About this game
Farflung is a free daily geography game you play on a map of the world. Each day’s expedition is five prompts. For each one, pin a country before the clock runs out. Several countries can be right, and the rarer answers take you further.
Ask for a country where German is an official language and most people think of Germany. It counts, but Luxembourg takes you much further. Farflung is about the answer that comes to mind second or third, then finding it on the map. After five prompts you reach camp, where you see your total distance, the other answers, and facts about the countries.
A new expedition opens every day at midnight in your local time. You can play for free in the browser, with no account and no download. There is also an untimed practice round. Farflung is made by Steve and published by Farflung LLC. Its official home is farflung.game, which is where Play opens.
How to play
- Read the prompt and think of a country that fits. You have 60 seconds. The same country can be used again later, as long as it fits that prompt too.
- Tap the map to place your pin, then tap again to move it. Scroll or pinch to zoom. The map has no country labels. By default it draws borders and shows the name of the country under your pin before you drop it.
- Press Drop pin to lock the answer. On a keyboard, tab to the map, use the arrow keys to pan, + and − to zoom, and Space or Enter to drop. If time runs out, a pin already sitting on a country is dropped for you. You get one answer per prompt.
- A correct answer adds distance in kilometres. Its rarity is Common, Uncommon, Rare, Elusive or Farflung. The answers people are least likely to think of travel furthest, and each prompt has at least one gem. A wrong country, or a clock that runs out with no pin on land, adds nothing.
- Press Next prompt. After the fifth pin, choose On to camp. Camp shows your total distance, every answer, and facts about the countries. You can share the result from there.
- For a harder game, open Difficulty in the menu. You can hide the country name under the pin, hide borders, or use a 30-second clock. A pin on a territory counts for the country it belongs to: Greenland counts as Denmark, and Guam counts as the United States.
- You get one try at each daily expedition. If you leave early you can come back, but the clock keeps running on an open prompt. For another go, open How to play and choose Practice round: one prompt, no clock, and it does not use up the daily game.
Good to know
What is Farflung?
Farflung is a free daily geography game. Each expedition is five prompts, and for each you pin one country on a world map. Several countries can be right. Rarer answers take you further.
Why do some answers travel further?
Rarity decides the distance. For a country where German is an official language, Germany is the common answer. Austria, Liechtenstein and Belgium go further, and Luxembourg is the Farflung gem. That example is only in the official guide. It is not one of the daily prompts.
When does a new expedition open?
A new expedition opens at midnight in your local time. Everyone gets the same five prompts for that date, and you get one try at it.
What if the pin is in the sea?
Move it onto a country before the clock runs out. A pin at sea, or one left on disputed ground, does not score. If time runs out with no pin on land, that prompt adds no distance.
Is Farflung free?
Yes. You can play as a guest in the browser, with no account and no download. Practice round can be tried as often as you like. The official game is at farflung.game, made by Steve and published by Farflung LLC.
